Authorities have apprehended a male suspect for attacking the leader of Denmark's liberal party.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was assaulted in a public square in Copenhagen on Friday. Police have arrested a male suspect, and Frederiksen is reported to have sustained non-serious injuries.
The incident occurred at Kultorvet square in the heart of Copenhagen, where Frederiksen had been campaigning with her party’s lead European election candidate, Christel Schaldemose, as per local media reports.
"Mette Frederiksen was assaulted and physically attacked by a man at Kultorvet in Copenhagen today. Mette is naturally shocked by the assault. I must say that it deeply affects all of us who are close to her," Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke stated in a social media post.
Frederiksen's office confirmed her shock over the incident but declined to provide further details. An anonymous source informed Denmark’s Ekstra Bladet newspaper that while Frederiksen was not seriously injured, she was visibly shaken.
This assault on Frederiksen comes shortly after an attempt on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico's life by a gunman. Fico, who attributed the attack to the "hatred and aggressiveness" of Slovakia's pro-Western political opposition, has since recovered.
Both opponents and allies of Frederiksen have condemned the attack. Peter Skaarup of the right-wing Denmark Democrats expressed solidarity with Frederiksen, emphasizing that violence is never acceptable in political discourse.
