Armed teenager brings 'bomb' to school

The 17-year-old was identified as a student at Perry High School in Iowa.

A teenager at Perry High School in Iowa shot six people at the school before turning the gun on himself, police told reporters Thursday. A sixth-grader died at the scene, while four other students and the school's principal, Dan Marburger, were hospitalized.

Police said that after a "systematic search" of the school, "improvised explosive devices" were discovered. But Iowa State Fire Marshals and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms "made the device safe."

Police refused to reveal more details about the explosive device, describing it only as "simple" and reassuring the public that there was no further risk. Police responded to the scene at approximately 7:37 a.m. local time, just before classes began on the first-day students returned from winter break.

"School hadn't started yet and fortunately there were very few students and teachers in the buildings, so I think that contributed to a good outcome in that regard," said Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante. FBI helps Jova in the Department of Criminal Investigation Investigation.
