Sabalenka sets Baptiste quarter-final
Sabalenka needed 1hr 25min to beat 23rd seed Zheng. In her on-court interview, she said:
“She’s a tough opponent and I’m super happy with the level I played at today. I can definitely say that it felt like home.”
Sabalenka added that she is adapting to Miami’s conditions:
“I feel like I’m getting better, serving better, getting used to these conditions, which are tricky. But I’m getting more and more comfortable with every match.”
She will next face unseeded American Hailey Baptiste, one of three American women to reach the last eight on Monday.
Gauff, Pegula and Bencic advance
Fourth seed Gauff beat Romania’s Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 and later said:
“I think overall I’m most proud of just mentally staying in there. As the match got longer I was able to raise my level.”
Gauff will face 12th seed Belinda Bencic, who beat American Amanda Anisimova 6-2, 6-2. Fifth seed Pegula defeated Romania’s Jacqueline Cristian 6-4, 6-1.
Mboko’s upset draws praise
Canada’s 10th-seeded Victoria Mboko beat Russia’s eighth seed Mirra Andreeva 7-6(7/4), 4-6, 6-0 and will meet Czech 13th seed Karolina Muchova, who defeated the Philippines’ Alexandra Eala 6-0, 6-2.
Former US Open champion Andy Roddick praised Mboko on his podcast:
“Mboko is going to win a slam in the next two years. She’s making the quarters or better in every single event. She gets through tough three-set matches all the time,”
he said.
Sinner progresses; Michelsen next
In the men’s draw, Sinner controlled his match against Moutet on the main court at Hard Rock Stadium and will next play unseeded American Alex Michelsen, who beat Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Mensik edged in third-set tiebreak; more seeds exit
Mensik saved six match points before falling to Tiafoe in a marathon third-set tiebreak. Tiafoe also saved two match points and won when a Mensik return drifted wide on Tiafoe’s seventh match point.
Tiafoe will face France’s Terence Atmane, who beat Canada’s seventh seed Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
Cerundolo, after defeating Medvedev, called it a tough encounter and said he stayed composed after Medvedev rallied:
“It was a great match, super tough… I didn’t know what to expect… But I kept believing and stayed there in the match.”
Medvedev’s loss followed earlier exits by Carlos Alcaraz, Australia’s fifth seed Alex De Minaur and eighth seed Ben Shelton.
Elsewhere, 31st seed Ugo Humbert beat Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko 6-4, 7-6 (7/2), while third seed Alexander Zverev defeated Croatia’s Marin Cilic 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
