Colon entered the October 2015 bout against United States boxer Terrel Williams with an unbeaten record of 16 fights, including 13 wins by knockout. During the fight, Colon alleged that Williams repeatedly struck him on the back of the head, an illegal punch in boxing known as "rabbit punches." The referee awarded Colon one point as punishment to Williams after a complaint about one of the punches.
The fight was ultimately awarded to Williams in the ninth round on disqualification after Colon's team removed his gloves while the fighter complained of dizziness. Colon collapsed upon returning to his dressing room and was diagnosed with a subdural haematoma. He underwent emergency brain surgery and remained comatose for 221 days.
