A Pakistani court on Monday ordered the detention of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi until July 22 on charges of abuse of power, Geo TV reported.

The complaint was filed by Pakistan's National Audit Office, an anti-corruption watchdog,  less than a day after an Islamabad court  acquitted Khan and his wife of illegal marriage charges. law. The couple were sentenced to seven years in prison in February for allegedly marrying shortly after Bibi's divorce.

The Islamabad court  ordered the director to interrogate  two suspects who are being held in Adiala jail in Rawalpindi and will appear in court next Monday. Their lawyers argued that the arrests were illegal and  the Supreme Court of Pakistan is reviewing an appeal against their release. Khan led the  government of Pakistan from 2018 to 2022 and was ousted in a no-confidence vote  in April 2022.  Several other charges were brought against him, including fraud for spreading divisive information. Most of the charges against Khan were dropped on appeal, but the former prime minister remains in custody in the illegal marriage case.
