Islamabad struck several "terrorist" targets in its vicinity following similar cross-border attacks in Tehran.
An Islamabad-based intelligence source told AFP that Pakistan had launched airstrikes against militant groups operating on Iranian soil. Several explosions were heard Thursday morning near Iran's southernmost border region, according to Iranian state media. An Iranian official told state news agency IRNA, speaking on condition of anonymity, that "several explosions" were reported in several parts of Saravan on Thursday morning. Another source said "several people were injured" in the attack, according to Mehr News. Islamabad has yet to officially acknowledge the attack, but Pakistani intelligence officials confirmed the attack and shared other details with AFP. Meanwhile, Indian media, including the Hindustan Times, reported that this airstrike targeted "Baluch separatist camps located on Iranian territory." The reported cross-border military action comes shortly after Tehran claimed responsibility for a series of missile and drone attacks targeting members of the Jaish al-Adli terror group in Pakistan's western Balochistan region. Tehran claimed the operation only targeted "Iranian terrorists" and "citizens of our friendly country, Pakistan, were not targeted."
However, Islamabad condemned the attack as an "unwarranted violation of its airspace" and warned of "serious consequences" for it. Pakistan's foreign ministry said two innocent children were killed in the attack and later recalled Pakistan's ambassador to Tehran.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Mumtaz Baloch said in a televised speech on the 1st: "Iran's flagrant violation of Pakistan's sovereignty last night is contrary to international law and the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter," and added: "Pakistan retains their rights". "To respond to illegal activities," he said.
Iran accused Jaish al-Adli militants of attacking police stations in southern Iran's Sistan and Balochistan last month and killing 11 police officers, Tasnim news reported. The armed separatist group, also known as the Justice Army, operates on both sides of the Iran-Pakistan border and has previously claimed a series of attacks on Iranian targets.
