Pentagon chief urges swift diplomacy to prevent Israel-Hezbollah war.

During a meeting with Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant, US Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin cautions against the 'catastrophe' of a broader conflict.

United States Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin emphasized the need for a diplomatic solution to prevent a costly war between Israel and Hezbollah. During a meeting with Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant, Austin attributed rising tensions to provocations by Hezbollah and underscored the destructive consequences of a full-scale conflict, which could escalate regionally.

"Diplomacy is clearly the best approach to prevent further escalation. We are actively pursuing diplomatic efforts to restore lasting calm along Israel’s northern border and facilitate the safe return of civilians on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border," Austin stated to reporters.

While Gallant has previously suggested the possibility of a major conflict with Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, he indicated ongoing collaboration with Austin to seek a diplomatic resolution, while also discussing military readiness for various scenarios.

Israel has accused Hezbollah of displacing thousands of Israelis near the Lebanese border, while Hezbollah, linked to Iran, has indicated its lack of interest in widening the conflict. The ongoing clashes have displaced Lebanese civilians and resulted in casualties on both sides.

Hezbollah, renowned for its military capability, poses significant risks in any larger confrontation with Israel, which the Biden administration has urged Israel to avoid. Nonetheless, the US has affirmed its support for Israel in the event of conflict, though Austin emphasized the catastrophic impact such a war would have on Lebanon and innocent civilians in both countries.
