Israel is signaling its rejection of Hamas's control over Gaza and exploring alternative governance options, according to its defense minister, Yoav Gallant. This stance further suggests a dismissal of the ceasefire proposal put forward by US President Joe Biden as Palestinian resistance persists amid the ongoing conflict.
"We are currently engaged in significant military operations, while simultaneously considering alternative governance to Hamas," stated Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in a Sunday announcement.
"We will isolate specific areas, remove Hamas operatives, and facilitate the introduction of forces that could pave the way for an alternative government. This strategy poses a threat to Hamas," Gallant added.
He emphasized, "Through military actions and the potential for governmental change, we aim to achieve two key objectives of this conflict: dismantling the Hamas regime and its military capabilities, and securing the release of hostages. At no stage will we accept Hamas rule in Gaza as part of any war-ending process."
Amid mounting pressure on Israel's government following Biden's ceasefire proposal, which was announced on Friday, far-right Israeli officials have threatened to resign if the ceasefire is accepted. These officials argue that accepting the proposal would signify the end of the conflict and the abandonment of the goal to dismantle Hamas.
Despite internal divisions, Biden's proposal has been described as a deal that Israel has reluctantly agreed to in order to secure the release of all hostages.
The war cabinet of Israel is scheduled to convene later on Sunday to discuss further actions.
