Protesters condemn the "genocide" of Palestinians in Gaza
Pro-Palestinian protesters set fire to the Israeli Embassy wall in Mexico City after clashes with riot police tasked with keeping them at bay. Approximately 200 people gathered outside the compound in the Lomas de Chapultepec neighborhood for the 'Urgent Action for Rafah' demonstration, following an Israeli airstrike that killed at least 45 Palestinians in Rafah, Gaza, on Sunday. Demonstrators, some with scarves covering their faces, hurled rocks and Molotov cocktails at police, breaching the barricade erected to block access to the embassy. Videos on social media depict police struggling to extinguish the flames while protesters attempt to ignite the embassy, leading to confrontations with security forces.
Mexico has lodged an intervention declaration with the International Court of Justice in support of South Africa's complaint accusing Israel of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Last Friday, the ICJ ordered Israel to immediately cease its military offensive in Rafah, Gaza, to prevent conditions that could lead to the physical destruction of the Palestinian population. Israel refuted the genocide allegations, stating its operations in Gaza adhere to the ICJ ruling. The Israeli Defense Forces claim civilian casualties in Rafah resulted from shrapnel hitting fuel tanks during a legitimate strike on Hamas militants. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant affirmed the IDF's intent to continue the Rafah operation to dismantle Hamas and rescue hostages taken during a previous attack against Israel.
