The incident occurred in the mountainous region of the North Caucasus.
The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Tuesday morning that a Russian Su-34 supersonic bomber crashed in a mountainous region of North Ossetia-Alania, killing both pilots. The plane was on a routine training flight.
The ministry said a preliminary assessment suggested the plane had technical defects, TASS reported.
North Ossetia is located in the North Caucasus and borders South Ossetia and Georgia.
The two-seater aircraft can attack ground targets with high-precision bombs and missiles. Russian Su-34s have flown several combat missions in Syria and Ukraine.
The incident came two months after a Tu-22M3 long-range strategic bomber crashed in southern Russia while returning from an attack in Ukraine, killing two of the four crew members.
In October 2022, a Russian Su-34 suffered engine failure and crashed into an apartment building in the southern city of Eysk, killing 16 people. Both pilots survived.
