The Iranian destroyer Alborz entered the Red Sea through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait as regional tensions escalated.
The 94th warship of the Iranian Navy, consisting of Alborz destroyers, entered the Red Sea on Monday, the Tasnim news agency reported, amid heightened tensions along the strategic sea route. He added that since 2009, Iranian warships have been operating in international waters to "secure shipping lanes, fight piracy, and carry out other missions."
After overhaul and equipped with the latest systems, the warship joined the Iranian Navy fleet in 2019. The flotilla's arrival in the Red Sea comes amid heightened tensions over Yemen's retaliatory attacks on Israeli-owned ships sailing to support Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Yemen's military issued a stern statement on Sunday warning the United States that it will take full responsibility for the consequences of the US Navy's deadly attack on Yemeni ships in the Red Sea. The warning comes after US Navy helicopters attacked four Yemeni naval vessels earlier in the day, sinking three and killing at least 10 Yemeni soldiers.
Yemeni forces have launched missile and drone attacks on ships heading to Israeli-occupied ports to support Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where the Israeli regime has been waging a brutal war of attrition for more than two months.
