Thousands Protest in Pakistan Demanding Release of Ex-PM Imran Khan

Khan’s party holds a rally in Islamabad, marking its first show of strength since the disputed February elections.

A Show of Strength for Imran Khan's Supporters

On Sunday, September 8, 2024, thousands of supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan took to the streets of Islamabad, demanding his release from prison. Khan, who has been incarcerated for over a year, faces charges that his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), claims are politically motivated. This rally marks PTI's first significant demonstration since the controversial national and regional elections held in February.

Rally Amidst Tensions and Blockades

The Islamabad administration had anticipated unrest and took measures to prevent it by blocking key entry points into the city with shipping containers and deploying riot police. Despite these obstacles, PTI supporters managed to gather in large numbers, with many marching towards the capital from various regions of Pakistan. Videos shared on social media platforms showed determined activists pushing aside containers to reach the rally site.

Hammad Azhar, a close aide to Khan, opened the rally with a passionate speech, declaring, “We will not rest until Khan is released from jail.” The sentiment was echoed by Salman Akram Raja, a prominent PTI leader, who emphasized that Khan is the only leader capable of rescuing the country from what he described as the “clutches of corrupt and incompetent politicians.”

Confrontations with Authorities

The rally was not without conflict. Reports indicated that PTI activists clashed with police, who responded with tear gas to disperse the crowd. A spokesperson for the Islamabad police accused protesters of throwing stones, resulting in injuries to several officers, including a senior official. Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder noted that this was the first time since Khan's arrest that PTI was granted permission by a court to hold a rally in Islamabad, although the authorities imposed strict regulations along the routes to the venue.

Supporters expressed their determination to stand by Khan, with one activist, Robina Ghafoor, stating, “It was very difficult to reach the rally. All roads had been blocked. But we are determined. If there is a call from Imran Khan to protest and we don’t come, that’s not possible. We are with him till our last breath.”

Khan's Legal Troubles and Political Landscape

Imran Khan, a former cricket star, was ousted from office in April 2022 through a no-confidence vote. Since his arrest in August 2023, he has faced multiple legal challenges, including accusations of inciting violence during protests on May 9, 2023, when his supporters attacked military installations. Despite these allegations, Khan has consistently denied any wrongdoing, and many of his convictions have been suspended or overturned in recent months.

The political climate surrounding Khan has grown increasingly tense. In July, the government announced plans to ban PTI, citing accusations of inciting violence and leaking classified information. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan condemned this move, labeling it a significant blow to democratic norms and indicative of political desperation. Additionally, a United Nations panel of rights experts stated that Khan's detention lacked legal basis and appeared aimed at disqualifying him from future political office.

Conclusion: A Divided Nation

The rally in Islamabad underscores the deep divisions within Pakistan's political landscape. As Khan's supporters rally for his release, the government faces mounting pressure to address the grievances of PTI and its followers. With the political situation remaining volatile, the future of Khan and his party hangs in the balance, as both sides prepare for what could be a protracted struggle for power and influence in the country.
