South Korean opposition leader stabbed in the neck

Former presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung was attacked during a visit to Busan.

Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, was taken to hospital after being stabbed by an unknown man while answering questions from reporters on Tuesday morning.

The incident took place at 10:27. Yonhap News reported that an unidentified man approached Mr. Lee and stabbed him in the left side of the neck. The attacker was quickly subdued and arrested.

In several videos posted on social media, Lee was surrounded by reporters when a man suddenly stabbed him. His condition was not immediately known. According to Yonhap News, Mr. Lee lost consciousness when he was taken to the hospital about 20 minutes after the attack, but the bleeding continued. Lee Jae-myung (59) lost to Yoon Seok-yeol by 0.73% in the 2022 presidential election and is expected to run again in 2027.

The president expressed deep concern for Mr. Lee Yun's safety and stressed that such violence should not be tolerated under any circumstances, a presidential spokesman said.
