CNN has been barred from flying on Air Force One to cover President Donald Trump's upcoming trip to a college football game in Knoxville, Tennessee, according to White House guidance. The network was replaced by Real America's Voice News, a conservative outlet, in the latest restriction imposed by the administration on major media organizations.

Last week, President Trump announced a ban on CNN, MS NOW and Politico from White House grounds. The three outlets responded with a lawsuit alleging the White House violated their First Amendment rights. The White House press pool consists of five major broadcast outlets that take turns recording and distributing video. In a show of solidarity, the other four providers, Fox, ABC, CBS and NBC, declined to participate in the pool until access was restored.
The current restrictions follow a pattern of tension between the Trump administration and news organizations it has criticized. The network video pool position on Air Force One has long been reserved for a member of the US network pool, a rotating arrangement among established broadcasters. Real America's Voice News is not part of that traditional pool, making its substitution for CNN a significant departure from longstanding practice.
US District Judge Timothy Kelly temporarily struck down the White House ban in an overnight ruling early Thursday, stating that the government's argument lacked factual support for the claim that the outlets were barred to protect national security. Kelly said the defendants offered no declarations or other support, classified or unclassified, explaining how the reporting damaged national security.
The judge's decision addressed press passes to the White House and did not directly mention pool duties or Air Force One. Earlier on Friday, the news outlets' attorney Theodore Boutrous Jr said the plaintiffs believe the judge's ruling also covers the issue of pool access.
The legal dispute remains active, with the plaintiffs arguing that the judge's ruling should extend to pool access and Air Force One seating. The administration has not indicated whether it will comply with the broader interpretation of the court's decision. Further clarification on the scope of the ruling and the future composition of the press pool is awaited.
