Key Developments
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky publicized the strike on Saturday, posting on X that Ukrainian forces had achieved "very strong results with long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea." He claimed the strikes targeted "vessels used in military cargo shipments involving Iran, as well as a warship."
Iran responded later the same day, confirming that its commercial vessel had come under attack in the landlocked waterway. The Foreign Ministry did not disclose the extent of damage to the ship but confirmed the casualties.
The ministry urged other nations to take a "responsible stance toward this reckless action by the Ukrainian regime" and hold its leadership accountable. It warned that "the responsibility for the consequences of the Ukrainian regime leader's adventurism will lie entirely with that regime, as well as its backers and instigators."
