Strategic Importance of the Patriot System
The Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) serves as a key interceptor within the United States' layered missile defense system. The system is designed to detect, track, and neutralize incoming tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and advanced aircraft. The PAC-3 MSE variant represents the most advanced iteration of the Patriot interceptor, featuring improved range and lethality.
The THAAD system, for which Lockheed Martin also received the $35 billion preliminary contract, provides an additional upper-tier layer of defense against short-, medium-, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles. Together, Patriot and THAAD form complementary tiers of the broader US missile defense architecture.
