Tuchel’s Defence of His Decisions and Assessment of the Elite
Tuchel said he made multiple decisions against Argentina “trusting my instinct, my intuition, my experience” in an effort to help the team secure the result. He added that because England did not get the outcome they wanted, he would “of course” take responsibility, while stressing that such calls are made “under stress” during games.
At his pre-match news conference on Friday, Tuchel also described the emotional weight of the semifinal defeat, saying the pain was felt most by those inside the team. Appearing alongside defender John Stones, he said the loss was a “very painful defeat” and a “scar” the players now carry.
Tuchel said the top nations have an advantage built over years, pointing to the record of Argentina, Spain and France. He argued that their history of titles and their expectations of reaching finals underline a “slight gap” England must close.
Tuchel called the third-place playoff “the match no one wants to play,” while urging England to use the Argentina defeat as fuel for an immediate response. He also described the semi-final as feeling like two different games, “until the goal and then after the goal,” highlighting the importance of game-state control under pressure.
